Americano vs Mexicano
Both are individual formats played in pairs where every player scores their own points. The difference is how the pairs are chosen.
| Feature | Americano | Mexicano |
|---|---|---|
| How pairs are drawn | On a rotation that ignores the standings. | From round two, from the standings: the players on top meet. |
| Partners | Every player partners every other before a pair repeats, when everyone fits on court. | A pair can repeat if the standings call for it. |
| Matches | Levels mix at random, so some rounds are lopsided. | Similar levels meet from round two on, so matches are closer. |
| Best for | Social sessions, mixed levels, groups that do not know each other. | Regular groups that want a ranking that reflects the day. |
| Sit-outs | Shared out evenly. | Shared out evenly, and you can compensate whoever sits out. |
| In Scorium | Fixed total or timed matches, timer, TV board and results card. | The same, plus a choice of how each block of four is paired. |
Which one?
Not sure? Start with Americano, and move to Mexicano once the group knows each other’s level.
